How To Make A Homemade Smoothie King Pitaya Bowl (PB Delight)
Ingredients And Why :
Frozen Pitaya (Dragon Fruit) : To create the smoothie bowl, you’ll need 1.5 packets of frozen dragon fruit (about 150g). If you can’t locate these packets at your local grocery store, you can substitute them with one cup of frozen dragon fruit cubes. Ensure that you opt for the red-fleshed variety since white-fleshed dragon fruit won’t produce the same vivid pink color in your smoothie.
Frozen Banana : Add more thickness to the blend and enhance natural sweetness
Frozen Strawberries + Turbinado : I sprinkled 2 teaspoons of turbinado sugar over the strawberries, then added a splash of water and mixed it up to make a syrup. If desired, you can substitute turbinado sugar with pure maple syrup.
Papaya Juice : Adding a liquid to the mixture is essential for smooth blending. I opted for papaya juice as it complements pitaya’s flavor, but feel free to use any fruit juice of your liking.
Recipe : (1 Servings )
Pitaya Base :
- 1 cup Dragon Fruit frozen (about 150 g)
- A handful of Strawberries frozen (about 1/2 cup)
- 1/2 Banana frozen
- 2 tsp Turbinado Sugar (or 1 Tbsp Pure Maple Syrup )
- 1/2 cup Papaya Juice
Toppings :
- 1 tbsp granola
- 1/2 banana sliced
- 1 handful of Goji Berries
- 1 handful of Whole Blueberries
- 1 tbsp peanut butter drizzle (6 lines)
Method :
- After adding the strawberries, I sprinkled 2 teaspoons of turbinado sugar over them. Then, I added a small amount of water to the mix, stirred it thoroughly to create a syrup, and finally combined the remaining ingredients and blended everything together.
- Once everything is combined and smooth, scoop your blended smoothie into a bowl and top with granola, banana slices, fresh fruit and an extra drizzle of peanut butter, if desired.

Are Pitaya Smoothie Bowls Healthy ?
It depends ! It is hard to answer with a simple “yes” or “no” . While pitaya itself is rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals such as vitamin C, iron, and magnesium ,it’s essential to understand the ingredients that go into a pitaya bowl.
Some pitaya bowls may contain high amounts of added sugar to enhance the taste of the fruit. Artificial syrups and sweetened soy or almond milk can further increase the sugar content, making the bowl less healthy than you might think. An average-sized pitaya bowl can contain between 21 to 62 grams of sugar per serving, which is a significant amount.
To put this into perspective, the World Health Organization recommends that both adults and children limit their sugar intake to no more than 10% of their total energy intake. For a 1,800kcal diet, that’s around 45g of sugar. A single pitaya bowl can contain more sugar than this, which is why it’s essential to be mindful of your overall sugar intake when consuming these bowls.
Furthermore, the toppings on a pitaya bowl can add to its overall sugar content. While natural sugars from fruits like berries and bananas are okay in moderation, adding more sweet toppings like honey and granola can quickly add up and push the calorie count of a pitaya bowl dangerously high.
Therefore, it’s essential to be aware of the ingredients in your pitaya bowl and to make conscious choices when ordering. While pitaya bowls can be a healthy and delicious option when made with minimal added sugar and healthy toppings, they can also be a calorie and sugar bomb if consumed excessively. Moderation is key when it comes to maintaining a healthy body weight and managing your sugar intake.
